THE POLITICS OF SECULARISM, THE POLITICS OF RELIGION

Much recent work on religion in IR has concentrated on investigating
the nature and implications of the 'global resurgence of religion',
the extent to which this resurgence challenges assumptions about the
secular character of international politics, and the role played by
religion in modern politics. What has received less attention,
however, is the political impact and role of secularism as a set of
doctrines and practices, and the possible connections between the
politics of secularism and the resurgence of religion. Discussion of
religion in IR would be arguably enriched through research into not
only the identity and politics of religion(s) and the behaviour of
religious actors, but also the nature of secularisms and their role in
political life.

This panel seeks to explore the assumptions implicit in different
conceptions of secularism (laïcité, common ground secularism, civic
religion etc), the political effects they produce, and their
relationship with religion(s).

Questions addressed might include:

- What is secularism, what forms does it take and what role does
secularism play in modern politics?

- Where, and on what basis, is the boundary between the secular and
the religious drawn?

- How do varieties of secularism influence the nature of political
interventions by religious actors? How do they define what constitutes
acceptable forms of religion?

- How do perceptions and interpretations of religion(s) affect the
politics of secularism?

- To what extent has secularism contributed to the resurgence of
religion, or vice versa?

This panel aims to contribute to the debate on religion in
international politics through exploring its relationship with
secularism. We welcome both theoretical and empirical explorations of
these issues.

The Editorial Board of Politikon, the International Association for Political Science Students' Academic Journal, invites graduate and undergraduate students to submit papers for review and possible publication.

Founded in 2001, the journal is published twice yearly and distributed in hard copy and online to more than 10,000 IAPSS members in more than 40 countries on every continent. Politikon publishes the best in undergraduate and graduate student scholarship from around the world. Politikon is recognised globally for its position as one of the leading academic journals publishing the work of students from across the fields of political science and international relations. The peer-review and refereeing process involves full Professors, leading academics and experts from across the world and abstracts from Politikon are included in the International Political Science Association's (IPSA) Annual International Political Science Abstracts.

Politikon is funded through contributions from both private and public institutions. These have included local and regional political science associations from throughout Europe and, in recent times, the European Commission. As well, Politikon benefits from IAPSS's partnerships with other established political science associations - including IPSA, the International Studies Association (ISA) and the European Political Science Network (epsNet) - with Politikon authors being invited to attend and present their research at major conferences and seminars. Events where Politikon authors have been invited include the 2006 ISA Annual Convention in San Diego and the 2007 IPSA Congress in Fukuoka, with authors also being invited to the forthcoming 2007 ISA Annual Convention in Chicago and 2007 epsNet Plenary Conference in Ljubljana..

In a crowded academic publication market Politikon has carved out a niche, becoming on of the longest standing and most highly regarded journals of political science and international relations for students in the world.

Articles submitted to the journal should meet the following standards:
- English language
- 4000 - 7000 words, including footnotes
- Microsoft Word or RTF file format
- Fully referenced in Harvard style (see http://tinyurl.com/nsfcg)
- An abstract of no more than 125 words
- Biographical information of the author (no more than 50 words)
- Be concerned with political science, international relations, international law, political economy, public policy or a related field. For this issue the Editorial Board is particularly interested in articles which consider minority, identity and Roma issues.

Submissions should be emailed directly to politikonjournal@iapss.org. A reply confirming receipt will be sent within 48 hours. All submissions should be received no later than 30th June 2007.

Theme: What keeps us apart, what keeps us together? International Order, Justice, Values

Encouraged by the success of its first conference in Istanbul in 2005, the World International Studies Committee agreed in San Diego in 2006 that the next conference would take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The Central and East European International Studies Association (CEEISA), in cooperation with the local host and all the members of the World International Studies Committee (WISC), has been entrusted with organizing the conference. The WISC is committed to making this conference truly global. We are determined to bring together scholars who may not have an opportunity to attend many international studies conferences regularly, and make it possible for them to create lasting professional networks with scholars from all over the world. This is how the WISC strives to live up to its name and make this unique effort a success.

The theme of the conference connotes global tensions and dilemmas, as well as cooperative possibilities. Furthermore, the theme invites debates on patterns of inclusion and exclusion. Finally, we want to encourage looking at global and regional problems through different lenses and from varying perspectives. Our general aim is to bring together scholars from all parts of the world to examine the contrasting perspectives on global problems and to set the agenda for our future explorations of international relations, broadly conceived.

The Programme Committee will organize three plenary roundtables on the themes of ‘International Order’, ‘Global Justice’ and ‘Global Values’ with participants drawn from different quarters of the globe.

In addition to the general conference theme, the Programme Committee wishes particularly to encourage panels or papers on the following themes:
1. Contemporary balance(s) of power: material and ideational power
2. New wars, conflicts and soft security issues
3. Human rights, duties and needs
4. Regional integration: formal and informal processes
5. Contending perspectives on environmental threats
6. Global civil society
7. International organizations: the politics of reform and effectiveness
8. Geopolitics, geoeconomics and geocultures
9. Identity issues and fundamentalism
10. Theorizing IR: the function and dysfunction of biases and simplicity
11. Global patterns of illicit flows: people, money and commodities
12. New trends in diplomacy and foreign policy
13. The values and pathologies of global pluralism
14. Power and Ethics in IR
15. Contemporary Foreign Policy Strategies of the G6:
the USA, the EU, China, India, Brazil and Russia
16. Global capitalism, globalization and neoliberal strategies
17. Politics of Migration
18. Teaching International Relations – techniques and priorities

This list is in no sense restrictive. The Committee invites submissions for panels or papers on other themes or topics as well.

The Conference is open to all members of any WISC member organization and to others with like interests in the scholarly and practical aspects of international studies. The Programme Committee reserves the right to refuse permission to participate. Decisions of the Programme Committee are final.

Proposals
Individuals may propose sections, panels or papers by completing the attached form to be available very soon on this website. A section consists of a number of panels (up to 10) on a particular theme. A panel consists of up to four papers, a discussant/chairperson, or it can take the form of a Round Table. Each panel lasts for 90 minutes. Papers givers will have not more than 12 minutes for their presentation, as will the discussant. Chairpersons of both panels and Round Tables should leave 30 minutes for discussion from the floor.

Papers will be given in English. It is expected that paper givers will circulate their paper to all other participants on their panel. In principle, the only equipment provided is an overhead projector, although equipment for a Powerpoint presentation may be provided if requested in advance. A paper will be allocated to an appropriate panel, tabled or rejected. Section and Panel proposals should include an international element among its participants or the Programme Committee may exercise its prerogative to include such an element. A tabled paper is an official contribution to the Conference but one that will not be discussed in a panel due to the exigencies of time, space or topic. Such papers may be uploaded on the Conference website.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS: 30 NOVEMBER 2007

The deadline for responding to submissions is 1 February 2008. The Programme Committee will, however, confirm acceptance of submissions before the deadline. This implies that early submission is recommended. Proposals received after the deadline, stipulated by the Programme Chairs, are unlikely to be included in the programme.

After successfully completing the first internship programme at ISJ in 2005, we are pleased to announce the details for the programme of 2007.

In 2005 we had selected three interns as listed below:

- Mr. Ardin Djalali, Council of Europe
- Ms. Hedieh Kianyfar, North Eastern University of Cyprus.

Purpose of the internship programme
1. Internships for university professors, young scholars, and post-graduate students are available at the Office of International Studies Journal (ISJ) in Tehran. These internships are intended to:
a) Increase the intern's function on publishing an article and to be familiar with the publication of a quarterly at the international level by giving them an opportunity to work in an academic atmosphere; and
b) Provide ISJ with the assistance and contribution of outstanding young professors and post graduate students.
2. The relationship between ISJ and the interns is one of mutual benefit. Interns are assigned to practical and theoretical work. They are involved in: researching international issues (especially on human rights), providing and assisting the process of producing a quarterly (ISJ), assisting the editor-in-chief, making the connection between ISJ and other quarterlies, universities, and research centers. Assisting in the activities of ISJ seminar and workshops include information activities and the registration process of candidates to the workshop.

3. The names of interns will be published in ISJ for 2 issues as “ISJ interns”.

Qualifications required
4. Interns will be selected among university professors, post-graduate students or holders of a PhD in International Human Rights Law, International Law, International Relations, Political Science, History, and Social Sciences. Preference will be given to those, within these disciplines, who have specialized in human rights issues. Applicants must be sponsored by an academic institution and must have a good command of English and be familiar with French. The people also familiar with Persian are preferred. Drafting ability in either English or French is required.

Internship dates and duration
Interns will be selected 15 June and be required to work for a minimum period of three weeks from July 7 to 31.

Conditions of service
5. According to the Islamic Republic of Iran legislation, interns must respect Iranian criteria for foreign people. Interns are not paid and they will work as volunteers in ISJ office by conducting research and practical work.
6. Interns are assigned to work with the editor-in-chief who is responsible for providing them with a description of their duties and a work plan.
7. ISJ internships are not remunerated and interns are not considered officials or staff members of ISJ. Travel costs and living expenses must be borne by the interns themselves or by a sponsoring institution.
8. Interns must pay 150 Euro as prices for all issues of ISJ, books and other documents which are provided by ISJ for interns.
9. ISJ accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. Interns must have their own health insurance. In case of illness or other circumstances that might prevent the completion of the internship, interns will inform editor-in-chief of ISJ.
10. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.
11. Regarding the problem of visa for our selected Americans interns in last year , ISJ can not make any promises for the obtaining of visas by US citizens but will try to facilitate it.
12. Interns are expected to work full-time and to carry out the duties assigned to them.

The programme structure, especially as regards workshops, is still quite flexible and can be reformed in accordance with the proposals from the participants. Especially it should be noted that although the main theme of the conference is 'CHALLENGES OF PEACE AND DEMOCRACY IN EUROPE' - this does imply that all papers should deal with Europe. On the contrary, the contents of the working groups should reflect the research being carried out at present within the European peace research community.

Conference language is English. Presented papers will be published.
